NEWS OF THE EARTH INTERNATIONAL  BBC Wildlife Magazine Aug 2006

Close to exhaustion and possibly death, this female leatherback turtle will live to fight another day thanks to the efforts of the Rosalie Sea Turtle Initiative (RoSTI) in south-east Dominica. She was found completely entangled in fishing and mooring lines and was barely able to lift her head above the water line, according to RoSTI director Rowan Byrne. With the help of colleague Dave Fabian, Byrne cut the struggling turtle free from the ropes and she swam off. Hundreds of leatherbacks are thought to die every year as a result of human activities – from consuming floating rubbish that they mistake for their natural food, jellyfish, to becoming trapped in gillnets or getting caught on longlines. More information from the Wider Caribbean Sea Turtle Conservation Network www.widecast.org That sinking feeling: the rubbish that’s killing sea turtles

Divernet News, dateline 13 June 2006
Turtle freed

A giant leatherback turtle was freed in early May after getting caught up in fishing gear off Dominica, in the West Indies.

The turtle had become ensnared in a fish trap plus the mooring lines of boats in a Dominican harbour. Marine biologist Rowan Byrne went out to the site, entered the water and cut away the snagged lines.

Taking some time to regain its strength, the turtle was able to swim off after about an hour.

Byrne is Director of Dominica's Rosalie Sea Turtle Initiative, a community-based project which aims to protect endangered turtle species which exist around Dominica and nest on its shores. Four years old, the organisation has "reduced poaching by 90% on nesting beaches", Byrne told Divernet.
