In January 1998, after completing an inspiring stint at Dr Samuel Gruber's Bimini Biological Field Station in the Bahamas, I set off for Baja California Sur, Mexico. My excitement was palpable; the last several months had been spent immersed in the world of sharks, surrounded by passionate individuals dedicated to their study and conservation. I was eager to continue my journey with Professor Carlos Villavicencio, a renowned Mexican elasmobranch biologist whose work I had long admired.
Upon arriving in Baja, I quickly adapted to my new environment, thanks to Carlos' support and the welcoming Mexican culture. Although I spoke no Spanish initially, I picked up essential phrases like "cerveza" (beer) and "tiburón" (shark) quite rapidly and "pollo" (Chicken), so I was not going to starve! Within days, I joined Carlos and his team from the Mote Marine Laboratory from Florida on a research expedition throughout the Gulf of California where I would see first-hand Carlos's work with fishing communities.
We explored offshore islands and coastal communities, where I learned about Carlos' hypothesis that Loreto on the Baja coast might be a nursery ground for great white sharks — a theory we discussed passionately and to this day it still prevalent, especially with a grey whale population nearby!
During this expedition, I encountered various species of sharks and rays, including stingrays, eagle rays, and, notably, manta rays. However, one experience stood out as both profoundly moving and educational. On an offshore island, local fishermen had caught several rays, including a full-term pregnant manta ray. The sight of this majestic creature, the size of a car bonnet, lying lifeless on the sand with its belly exposed facing up to the blue sky, was heartbreaking.
Carlos guided me over to the manta ray, his voice tinged with both sadness and scientific curiosity. He gently pressed his hand on the ray's abdomen, and to my amazement, a tiny tail emerged from the cloaca. With a few more careful movements, a baby manta ray, no larger than a man's hand, slipped into Carlos' palm. This newborn was a dazzling array of iridescent colours, all colours of the rainbow sparkling and glistening in the Mexican sun as he moved his hand gently. It was an incredibly rare sight — so rare, in fact, that Carlos intended to preserve the baby manta ray for educational purposes.

This experience left an indelible mark on me. It was a poignant reminder of the delicate balance within marine ecosystems and the devastating impact human activities can have on these majestic creatures. Manta rays, part of the Mobulidae family, are gentle giants of the ocean, often reaching wingspans of up to 7 meters (23 feet). They are filter feeders, consuming large quantities of plankton as they glide gracefully through the water. Sadly, they are endangered, primarily due to bycatch and targeted fishing for their gill rakers, used in traditional Chinese medicine — many of these beliefs being completely false.
The importance of manta rays extends beyond their grace and beauty. They play a critical role in marine ecosystems by regulating plankton populations, which in turn supports the entire marine food web. Protecting these creatures is crucial for maintaining ocean health and biodiversity.
During my time in Baja, I also participated in various other research activities. On another occasion working with Carlos's team, I managed to set off on another field trip working with Scalloped hammerheads. The project involved analysing the full stomach contents of scalloped hammerhead sharks to understand their diet. This endeavour was both fascinating and gruesome, revealing a mix of squid beaks, fish bones, and occasionally, plastic debris. Even in 1998, the presence of plastic in marine environments was a troubling sign of the growing pollution problem, which has since become a significant global issue.
I remember on one of the days I had 107 — yes, 107 — shark stomachs in individual bags in two buckets I carried back to my hotel room. By the end of this day I did look like a serial killer covered in fish viscera, guts and blood splashes, but it was a great day. I think from memory I had many a fight with large pelicans chasing a fishy snack!
Another memorable experience was camping on a small island, where I had a humorous yet unnerving encounter with wild pigs. The islanders had introduced these pigs as a food source, and their nocturnal visit to my tent provided a moment of comic relief amidst the intensity of fieldwork.
Reflecting on these experiences, I am reminded of the profound interconnectedness of life. The loss of a single manta ray and its unborn offspring underscores the broader challenges facing marine conservation. Yet, it also highlights the resilience and dedication of researchers like Carlos and the countless others working tirelessly to protect these vital ecosystems. My journey in Baja California Sur was a blend of scientific discovery, cultural immersion, and personal growth. It deepened my understanding of marine biology and reinforced my commitment to conservation.
